01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Located on the basement level B1 of an Ichigaya building, Shoukichi shifts character dramatically between day and night. On weekday lunchtimes, covers are placed over the tabletop griddles, making way for substantial set meals centered on fried dishes. Strip menus lining the wall offer plenty to ponder, from a mixed fry lunch featuring crispy chicken karaage, minced meat menchi-katsu, and breaded white fish to a satisfying set with plump deep-fried oysters.
When evening service begins, the covers come off, and the house specialties—okonomiyaki savory pancakes and runny monjayaki—take center stage. Fillings run the gamut, including thick, signature okonomiyaki like Shoukichi-ten or beef tendon gyusuji-ten, as well as staples like spicy cod roe mentaiko monja and a tomato-cheese variation. Guests hold the spatulas themselves, sizzling the mixture on the griddle to their preferred finish right at the table.
The venue also functions smoothly as an iron-griddle izakaya, ideal for lingering over side dishes like maitake mushrooms sautéed in butter or grilled beef and pork offal while sipping draft beer or Hoppy. Seating includes standard tables alongside raised tatami areas, and a wide array of cashless payment methods such as PayPay, Rakuten Pay, and credit cards makes stopping by straightforward.
